I had never seen a physalis before I moved to Germany. It was one of those strange foods that I had to look the English name up for, which happens to be Cape gooseberry (still not something I'd heard of). I have since learned that they are from South America and it's suggested they got their name from Africa's Cape of Good Hope.
Here they are often seen along side fancy desserts (yes, I would know). However, you can also buy them at the grocery. It's related to the tomato, but also has a taste similar to a tomato mixed with a pineapple (just trust me on this). The husky shell is also kind of neat, you open them up and the little tomato like berry is attached inside.
We like them.
