Heat Wave

We are currently having a sweltering heat wave over here. I'm really not one for heat - unless of course I'm lounging on a beautiful beach with crystal clear turquoise water, but the closest I've been to any water ways lately is the Isar here in Munich or the Salzach in Salzburg.

For some reason I think I have a mental block on how miserable Europe can be in the summer - who decided that air conditioning is overrated anyway?

I've also been working nonstop now that the tourist season is in full swing. Some days it's amazing and other days I feel like I am herding cats. None the less it's usually fun to interact with people from other cultures and to have interesting conversations. Yesterday we talked about traditional dishes from our home lands and how people celebrate festive occasions.

I'm convinced I need to make a trip to Malta. I had a tour last month and one of the women actually makes the Air Malta uniforms for the flight crew by hand. This week I had another couple that was affiliated with Air Malta and they were just as delightful as the couple from last month. They both gave me their email addresses to get in touch once I make it over.

Working in the crazy sun can be very exhausting, but last week I came home to flowers, a tiny cake, and a delicious fruit salad courtesy of Stefan and a sweet package with a beautiful and delicious bar of chocolate from a faraway friend.

I also was able to check out the Roman ruins / excavations under the Salzburg Cathedral. They are only open during the months of July and August, so if you are in the area it's definitely worth checking out. (These images definitely do the place justice - just trust me on this one.)

As much as I'd love to update more often sitting anywhere near this inferno of a computer is just not happening. I probably seem like a hermit when I'm not working, because all of our blinds are closed in hopes to keep the sun from heating this place even more.

I visited Munich for the first time a little over a week ago and yes, it was HOT!!!!!! It was so hot, in fact, that the chocolates I bought melted :( but we'll still eat them anyway!

Hope it cools off to more comfortable temps soon!

I hope you at least had a couple decent days! At least you had some chocolate - that always makes me happy!

Emily -- Love your blog, especially since I'm a Midwest gal that now lives in the San Francisco area. We were in France during that heat wave and Thank God our hotel rooms had a/c. Couldn't have made it without the a/c although finding a cold drink was hard.

I'm taking my husband to Munich in a couple of years (2012) and can't wait. Obviously, I'm already looking at all the blogs. I was there almost 20 years ago (cough cough) for Oktoberfest and always swore I would return, so now we are going to return. The other thing I realized is women in France don't drink beer. Even though I love wine, I will be much more at home in Germany since I also love beer.

A question - I took German when I went on my trip 20 years ago, but have forgotten most of it except for Danke, Bitte. I want to start beefing up on my German for the trip. Do you have any books/tapes/online resources you recommend?

Guten Tag to you and thank you for this great blog! Oh yes, and my brother-in-law has been in Singapore for work for the past 3 years and life there is very much like you described. His wife is 5'9", very thin, but is considered HUGE by Asian clothing standards. She can't buy anything there to wear.

I'm more than happy to help and glad that you've enjoyed reading here. I love the Bay area + need to get back that way.

It sounds like you are on top of things! I have a few things I'd highly recommend for language studies:
livemocha.com
single-serving.com (this is more of a cheat sheet)
lingq.com

My favorite book is a bilingual visual dictionary from DK. They are very comprehensive and you can easily mark things around your house or study a page each night. The food section is particularly helpful.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one struggling with the clothing situation in Asia. I guess you just have to bring everything along if you move there, but what a pain!

I hope Oktoberfest is just as much fun as you remember it. We're gearing up for the next one in just a couple weeks with of course more visitors, but it should be a fun time.

Have fun planning!
