Don't get me wrong - I'm not expecting Americanized Italian, à la Olive Garden. We do at least have authentic Italian waiters, waitresses, and I assume restaurant owners, so the food is as close as it can be without crossing the Dolomites. Having wood fired pizza is one of my criteria for a pizza restaurant I will return to.
Last night we went to went to L'Angolo della Pizza, which has been hailed as the best pizza in all of Germany, according to Munich's prosieben TV station. So much for the bias, and the fact that it is in our delightful little neighborhood, we decided to check it out. For a quiet and drizzly evening they had quite a decent crowd.
I was amazed at the portions, but the food was also quite good... and they even had wood fired pizzas. I just wish they had more exotic toppings, but I know I can't have it all.
Interesting note on Italians and their cooking, at least the Italians living in Germany...
ReplyDeleteOur friend Fabio, yes I know that you can't get more stereotypical, had a brief 5 year stint as a restaurant owner here. Fabio is hands down an incredible cook. I swear, he is really the best. BUT, Fabio would absolutely freak if a customer asked for something not on the menu. He would pace around the kitchen, muttering that it can't be done. That is NOT pizza, with a funny topping. I brought up a white pizza once, he spent hours explaining to me why that cannot be done.
In Venice this weekend, we went to a pizza place that offered 50 different toppings AND white pizzas!
It seems like our dear Italian friends in Germany missed the change boat that has floated through Italy!

ReplyDeleteIt's been WAY too long since I made it to Italy, which is tragic - it's so close! I'm going to have to be on the lookout for one with more exotic toppings when I go next time. Also, your Venice photos really make me want to get back - Thanks!
